In my dollhouse I have a dining room but I also wanted a breakfast nook. My friend gave me the idea.
First I needed a bench of some sort. I used thin balsa wood and tried to create benches but the wood just buckled from the wetness of the glue...
I decided how wide and high I want the back.
Then for the seat I cut a piece out of a block of wood.
Next came the side pieces. I wanted to make sure that it wouldn't interfere with the person working at the counter.
Making sure they fit okay...
Gluing them together, making sure it's somewhat square as well as trying to keep the thin pieces from buckling...
I cut pieces of cardboard for the base of the cushions, making sure they fit...
I used 2 layers of quilt batting for the cushion.
And covered each piece with fabric, hot gluing it to the back of the cardboard.
Then I started on the back...
Fitting the cardboard...
And gluing the pieces together...
And trimming the edges so there isn't too much bulkiness...
It fit okay but I didn't glue it together yet because I wanted to paint it first...
After I painted it I added some trim to hide the wood.
I decided that the fabric I used for the cushions would clash too much with the wallpaper so I found some wide ribbon and reupholstered the cushions.
Then I glued them on.
And covered the raw edges with more trim...
I thought that the sides would look better with some trim so I cut some square slivers of wood to fit like I wanted it to...
I painted them before gluing them on because I knew my hands wouldn't be steady enough to paint them once they were glued on...
Now they match the kitchen cabinets!
Now it's time for the table...
I had a dowell that belongs to the dollhouse that I haven't started on yet. I hesitated using it but I decided that since I want to do my own thing with it I probably won't need it so I sawed a piece off for the table base.
Then I rummaged through my scraps till I found a round piece with a hole in the middle. The thumbtack is for holding the 2 pieces together.
I added glue and stuck them together. I had poked a hole in the leg prior to adding glue because I wanted to try to get it in the center.
I considered making a wooden table top but I was afraid that it would buckle from the glue. Instead I found an old can lid and cut the edge off because it was a little too wide.
The pedestal was a little high so I cut some off.
And painted it, taking out the thumbtack so it stands right...
I cut a circle of fabric for the tablecloth and hand stitched lace around the edge.
Then I hot glued some trim around to hide my stitches.
Next I made the table runner from the same ribbon as the seats are covered with. I added some fringe in hopes that it would weight down the table cloth.
I trimmed the fringe in a v just because...
And glued it on the table. I didn't glue the tablecloth to the table because it creates bumps plus I was having trouble with the table top staying glued on so I thought I might want to change it later.
Here's a few more photos. I think my kitchen is about done except for accessories...
